Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive technique that uses sound waves to create images of different areas of the body. This exam is most commonly used to diagnose problems in the abdomen, pelvis, blood vessels, and during pregnancy to view the fetus.

THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT

• Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your scheduled time so that you may complete the registration process.
• Once the registration process is complete, you will be directed to the Diagnostic Imaging Department and a registered technologist will bring you to the exam room and you will be asked to change into a hospital gown.
• You will be asked to lie down on the exam table and the technologist will apply a small amount of warm gel onto the area that will be scanned. The technologist will then glide a small transducer* over the gel while applying a small amount of pressure to obtain the images.
• The ultrasound exams generally take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

*A device that produces sound waves that bounce off body tissues and make echoes. The transducer also receives the echoes and sends them to a computer that uses them to create a picture called a sonogram.

Once the procedure is finished you may change and leave. Your results will be forwarded to your physician who will then explain them to you.
