Diagnostic Imaging
An echocardiogram is a noninvasive ultrasound test that evaluates heart function. During an echo test, high-frequency sound waves from a hand-held wand placed on your chest provide pictures of the heart’s valves and chamber. These echoes are turned into moving pictures of your heart that can be seen on a video screen to evaluate the pumping action of your heart.
PMH provides exercise or medication-induced cardiac stress testing or treadmill testing.

THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your scheduled time so that you may complete the registration process.
- Once you have registered for your exam you will be escorted to the radiology department.
- The technologist will explain the process to you and you will be asked to sign a written consent prior to the exam.
- For an exercise stress echo, wear flat, comfortable shoes (no bedroom slippers or sandals) and loose, lightweight shorts or sweatpants.
- For all other echocardiograms you will be given a hospital gown to wear.
- The test will take up to an hour to complete.
Once your echocardiogram is finished you may change and leave. Your results will be forwarded to your referring healthcare provider who will then explain them to you.
